Ireland gets tough on beggar gangs

IRELAND plans to impose tough new penalties on beggars for the first time since the 1845 Potato Famine.

Justice minister Dermot Ahern said a maximum 700 fine or a month in prison is necessary because of the growth of professional begging gangs who harass pedestrians. Children often are involved.
