Interview: Tom Maxwell, author

Date of birth: 26 July, 1979.

Occupation: Author and press officer.

What sort of school pupil were you? Geeky, minus the brains.

Were your school days the best days of your life? No, because I was so awkward around the opposite sex that I made John Gordon Sinclair in Gregory's Girl look like Casanova. Very little has changed in that respect.

What was your first job? Argos when I was 15. I worked in the storeroom so my spots wouldn't frighten the customers.

What has been your most unusual job? Potato roguer. If you ever want to know the difference between Yukon Golds and Maris Pipers then I'm your man.

My biggest achievement so far has been... Persuading someone to publish a Scottish football book that is not about the Old Firm.

My worst moment ever was... Snowboarding headfirst, without a helmet, into a tree – maybe it explains a few things.

Three words that sum up my personality are... Grumpy but loveable.

Three places in Edinburgh you could not live without? The Cameo, Holyrood Park, The Witchery.

Who is your best friend? My beautiful fiance, Jenna.

Which TV show do you never miss? I find The Apprentice worryingly addictive.

If you could bring one show to Edinburgh what would it be?

Planet of the Nymphomaniacs. If that musical doesn't exist then I think someone should write it.

The Lone Rangers: An English Club's Century in Scottish Football by Tom Maxwell is out on 8 August, 17.99 (hardback)
