Two dead in Peru prison riot
TWO inmates died and six guards were held hostage during a riot by about 500 inmates at a northern prison.
Chief cabinet minister Javier Velasquez said the violence erupted on New Year's Eve in the prison in Chachapoyas, about 400 miles north-east of Lima. The guards were later released after prisoners were persuaded to end their protest.
