Tiger numbers get triple boost
A RARE Sumatran tiger has given birth to three cubs in western Indonesia.
Arif Makhfud, an official at Taman Rimbo Zoo in the Sumatran province of Jambi, said the nine-year-old mother, Uni, delivered the cubs on Sunday. Keepers have not yet been able to check the sex of the cubs.
Uni was brought to Jambi three years ago along with Peter, a seven-year-old male from Jakarta. She gave birth to a pair of females two years ago.
Sumatran tigers are the world’s most critically endangered tiger subspecies, with numbers now at around 400. Few have been bred in captivity.
