Three held over machete deaths

THREE people have been charged with hacking to death four policeman hours before Kenya’s presidential election this month.

The officers were among 15 hacked to death by machete-wielding gangs during an otherwise peaceful election campaign.

Their deaths have been blamed on the Mombasa Republican Council, which wants a referendum on the secession of the coastal region. It had threatened to disrupt the election, narrowly won by Uhuru Kenyatta, son of Kenya’s founder, Jomo. Kenyatta faces charges of crimes against humanity at the International Criminal Court in The Hague.
