Tension rises as Iran police battle protesters
IRAN'S defeated presidential candidate Mirhossein Mousavi told his supporters he was ready for martyrdom yesterday as police clashed with protestors again on the streets of Tehran.
A Mousavi ally said: "In a public address in south-western Tehran Mousavi said he was ready for martyrdom and that he would continue his path."
The declaration came amid battles in Tehran between Iranian police and militia and opposition supporters, who believe the 13 June election won by President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad was rigged. The Iranian authorities, in a policy endorsed by supreme leader Ayatollah Khameini, warned demonstrators yesterday any more of the protests that brought hundreds of thousands of Iranians out on the streets of the capital last week would meet a harsh response.
