Teetotal Ronaldo wins libel case against Daily Mirror

FORMER Manchester United star Cristiano Ronaldo accepted "substantial" libel damages yesterday over a false allegation that he went on a "bender" at a Hollywood nightclub.

Ronaldo, who does not drink alcohol, also received an apology at the High Court in London over the claims, published in the Daily Mirror last year.

His QC, Ronald Thwaites, told Mr Justice Eady how the newspaper reported that he had "gone on a bender" in Los Angeles despite being on crutches after an ankle operation.

In a statement, Ronaldo said: "I take training and recovery from injury very seriously and would never have 'gone on a bender'."

Mr Thwaites said:

"He did attend the nightclub, (but] he did not drink … He does not drink alcohol because he takes his health, fitness and recovery from injury very seriously. Nor did he throw his crutches to the floor and try to dance."
