Socialist party in turmoil
RIVAL factions vied at an acrimonious Socialist Party congress yesterday to install a leader capable of taking on French president Nicolas Sarkozy.
Sgolne Royal, who lost to Sarkozy last year, is standing for party secretary, but rival leaders who blame her for the party's third defeat in as many presidential elections are in tortuous talks to find an alternative. Some have even voiced fears the party could fall apart.
"You're all in favour of party unity, but unity only behind yourselves and your positions," chided outgoing party secretary Franois Hollande in his speech at the Reims congress.
The grassroots are divided too. A pre-Congress vote by party members on competing "motions", or policy proposals, failed to give any of the rival leaders a decisive advantage.
