Small moves in Hong Kong
Hong Kong’s pro-China faction has edged to a majority in the former-British colony’s weekend election, results showed yesterday. Pro-democratic parties, however, retained enough of a majority to veto any proposed changes to the constitution.
Many expected that Hong Kong’s broad array of pro-democracy parties would make big gains with support from people increasingly frustrated with the semi-autonomous Chinese city’s new Beijing-backed leader, Leung Chun-ying.
The pro-democracy camp could not capitalise because feuds and rivalries prevented a unified strategy, analysts said.
