Sign of thaw on China-Taiwan front
CHINA’S top negotiator with Taiwan is to send senior envoys to his counterpart’s funeral in Taipei, the state news agency Xinhua said yesterday - a day after the launch of the first non-stop flights between the two nations in 55 years.
The visit will be the first since the late 1990s by high-level Chinese officials to the self-ruled island that China regards as a renegade province. Ties between China and Taiwan have deteriorated since the pro-independence Chen Shui-bian was elected Taiwan’s president in 2000.
