Shuttle docks with International Space Station

US SPACE shuttle Atlantis docked with the International Space Station yesterday on a mission to deliver Europe's first permanent space research facility.

Atlantis linked up with the station more than 200 miles above Earth, ending a two-day orbital journey.

Atlantis is carrying seven astronauts and the European Space Agency's Columbus laboratory, which will be attached to the station today during a spacewalk led by German Hans Schlegel.

Photographs of the shuttle taken by the astronauts will be analysed by Nasa to determine if any damage was done to the shuttle during its climb into orbit.
