Screen star loses gun crime appeal

Bollywood actor Sanjay Dutt was sentenced to five years’ jail by India’s Supreme Court yesterday for possession of illegal weapons in a case linked to the 1993 Mumbai bombings.

Dutt, 53, spent 18 months in prison and was sentenced to six years for acquiring illegal weapons from the men convicted of the Mumbai attacks that killed 257 people.

But he appealed and was released on bail in 2007, pending a further hearing.
