Russia veto for Cyprus
RUSSIA has vetoed a UN Security Council resolution put forward by Britain and the United States to encourage Greek and Turkish Cypriots to back a plan to unify their island.
The vote on the measure was 14-1 in the 15-nation council, but Russia’s sole "no" vote was enough to kill it because of its veto power.
Three days before Saturday’s twin referendums in Cyprus on the UN reunification plan, Russian deputy ambassador Gennady Gatilov said the measure should be taken up only after the plan is adopted by both sides.
