Pressure grows for Uzbekistan killings probe

THE US, NATO and the European Union have joined the United Nations in pressing for an international probe into the alleged killing of hundreds during an authorit-arian crackdown in Uzbekistan.

President Islam Karimov has staunchly resisted calls to end the crackdown in the city of Andijan.

Russia, mean-while, has signalled it does not intend to pressure Mr Karimov.

Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov has described the killings as an "internal matter."
