Obama backs calls for Iran vote-rigging investigation
US PRESIDENT Barack Obama said he does not know who rightfully won the Iranian election, but that Iranians have a right to feel their votes mattered.
With images of bloodied protesters in Tehran's streets recalling the Islamic revolution 30 years ago, Mr Obama said an investigation into alleged vote-rigging should go ahead without additional violence.
Today Iranian state television said seven people had been killed near the site of a rally in Tehran.
It did not specify if the dead were opposition supporters or others.
It also said several people were wounded when "thugs" tried to attack a military post.
At the White House, Mr Obama told reporters: "It would be wrong for me to be silent on what we've seen the last few days. And what I would say to those people who put so much hope and energy and optimism into the political process, I would say to them that the world is watching and inspired by their participation, regardless of the ultimate outcome."
