New judge assigned in Jackson doctor trial

THE involuntary manslaughter case against Michael Jackson's cardiologist was assigned to a new judge during a brief proceeding in Los Angeles last night.

Dr Conrad Murray, his lawyers and prosecutors, assembled before supervising superior court judge Peter Espinoza, who assigned the case to judge Michael Pastor and sent them to his courtroom.

Issues awaiting the new judge include setting a date for a preliminary hearing and Dr Murray's fight to keep his medical licence. The state attorney general, representing the state medical board, has moved to revoke Dr Murray's licence pending trial.

Jackson died from acute intoxication by the anaesthetic propofol and other sedatives. Dr Murray has pleaded not guilty to involuntary manslaughter.

Earlier, dozens of Jackson fans rallied outside a Los Angeles courthouse.

They carried placards demanding stronger charges against Dr Murray.

Some fans said they came from as far as the Netherlands and France and brought a huge banner signed by fan club members in Europe.

They said they remained devoted to Jackson's musical legacy and would not be satisfied unless Dr Murray goes to prison.

If convicted, Dr Murray could face a maximum of four years behind bars.

The court agenda today included assigning a judge for the case.
