New Jersey governor decides to wait out 2012 election

Republican voters left unimpressed by the current crop of would-be presidential candidates had their hopes of a white knight dashed yesterday.

New Jersey governor Chris Christie rebuffed the advances of supporters and party bigwigs alike, telling them “now is not my time”.

His announcement will come as a disappointment to many Republicans. A poll released yesterday found that 42 per cent wanted him to run as a 2012 challenger in a mixed field. Mr Christie was tipped as a real threat in the race had he run, not least towards current front-runner, the former Massachusetts governor Mitt Romney, who also seeks to draw moderate support.

But even those from the right, including Texas governor Rick Perry, may be sleeping a little easier knowing the popular New Jersey politician has ruled himself out of the fight to challenge president Barack Obama.

Mr Christie has repeatedly said he will not contest next year’s election, implying that he will wait until 2016 to run.
