Mum spared stone death

A MOTHER sentenced to death by stoning for adultery today won her appeal.

An Islamic appeals court in northern Nigeria ruled Amina Lawal should not face death by stoning for adultery in a case that has drawn international outrage.

The 32-year-old would have become the first woman stoned to death since 12 northern states began adopting strict Islamic law, or Shariah, in 1999.

A five-judge panel rejected the single mother’s conviction in March 2002, saying she was not given "ample opportunity to defend herself".
