Maoist protests bring capital to halt

TENS of thousands of Maoist demonstrators jammed Nepal's capital for a second day yesterday, blocking the streets leading to the main bureaucratic offices in Katmandu and halting day-to-day government operations.

The Maoists accuse the army's chief of opposing the integration of thousands of former rebel fighters into the national army – a key component of a peace deal which saw the Maoists lay down their arms three years ago.
