Local official in Putin’s party killed

Two gunmen shot dead a ruling party official in Russia’s North Caucasus yesterday, authorities said. The Kremlin is fighting to subdue an Islamist insurgency in the area.

The gunman shot Boris Zherukov – head of president Vladimir Putin’s ruling United Russia party in the local parliament – in his office in Nalchik.
