Israeli defence minister to quit

Israeli defence minister Ehud Barak, a leading strategist in confronting Iran over its nuclear programme, has announced he will quit political life after the country’s 22 January general election.

His resignation could mean the departure of the most moderating influence on hawkish prime minister Benjamin Netanyahu.
