Iraq slaps election ban on Sunni leader

A PROMINENT Sunni politician has been barred from standing in elections in March because of alleged ties to Saddam Hussein's now-banned Baath Party.

The ban on Saleh al-Mutlaq, imposed by a parliamentary committee, is likely to further stoke Iraq's sectarian tensions.

Sunni unrest after the 2005 elections was the key reason for the violent insurgency that followed in the next two years.
