Iranian reporter goes on hunger strike

A US-IRANIAN reporter jailed by Tehran for espionage has gone on hunger strike, her father said yesterday.

Reza Saberi said his daughter Roxana had called from prison to say she was on her fifth day of hunger strike and would continue to refuse food until she was released from jail. "She's not eating anything… I'm very worried," he said. Judging by her voice, "she seems to be weak," Reza Saberi said.

Roxana Saberi, 31, was sentenced on April 18 on charges of spying for the United States, in a verdict that could complicate Washington's efforts toward reconciliation with the Islamic Republic after three decades of mutual mistrust.
