India arrests founder of Islamic militant group
INDIAN police have arrested a founder of a little-known Islamic militant group, which has claimed responsibility for a wave of bombings that have killed more than 120 people in three Indian cities this year, authorities said yesterday.
The suspect, identified as Mohammed Arif Shaikh, was arrested with four others while in possession of explosives, ammunition and detonators. They were planning an attack on Mumbai, India's financial capital, police said.
Shaikh founded Indian Mujahideen along with a Pakistan-based man, Amir Razaak, according to Rakesh Maria, the head of Mumbai police crime branch.
The group has claimed responsibility for bombings that ripped through India's capital, New Delhi, killing 21 people this month.
It also said it was behind bombings that killed 61 people in the western city of Jaipur in May and blasts in the western state of Gujarat that killed at least 45 in July.
India's security forces have come under harsh criticism for failing to stop the bombings, which have been hitting Indian cities every few months for three years.
Police said the five men were arrested in three separate raids in northern Mumbai suburbs over the past two weeks.
It was unclear exactly what day Shaikh was arrested.
