Hoogstraten wins
NICHOLAS van Hoogstraten, the property magnate who was convicted of manslaughter this year, yesterday won a High Court ruling that a prison governor had unlawfully denied him the right to see and take advice from an Italian lawyer before he is sentenced.
A judge declared that European Union law gave Hoogstraten, 57, the right to request the services of Rome-based Giovanni di Stefano, who represented Arkan, the assassinated Serbian warlord.
But Geoffrey Hughes, the governor of Belmarsh prison in London, might seek to block Mr di Stefano having access to Hoogstraten on grounds of "character and antecedents".
