Haitians takes to streets in corruption protest

About 2,000 Haitians angry at perceived government corruption marched in the country’s capital last night, calling for the president to resign.

The protesters called for the departure of president Michel Martelly as they marched past Port-au-Prince’s cinderblock shanties and burned piles of tyres.

It was the latest anti-government demonstration this year to draw a crowd of this size.

In September, several thousand people marched to criticise the Martelly administration for not doing enough to keep down the cost of living. Mr Martelly is a former pop star who was sworn in as president last year.

Many Haitians hoped his government would improve their lives following the 2010 earthquake but some say Mr Martelly has fallen short of their expectations.
