Guru power: Popular yogi detained at anti-corruption march on parliament

Popular Indian yoga guru Baba Ramdev addresses a rally in New Delhi yesterday, before being arrested, left.

Ramdev and thousands of his supporters were trying to march to parliament, to ramp up an anti–corruption protest and press for a change of government.

As he was led away, Ramdev shouted slogans urging his supporters to fight to end corruption and seek the repatriation of huge amounts of money he says is stashed in foreign banks. Waving flags, the protesters climbed into a row of police buses parked around the New Delhi fairground that Ramdev and his supporters had occupied for the past four days. Thousands were detained, and police said they would be taken to a stadium on the outskirts of the city.

Before the march, the yogi urged his supporters to throw out the ruling Congress Party and bring in a ‘clean’ government.
