French abbey in memorial plan for Inglis
ELSIE INGLIS, described as Scotland's answer to Florence Nightingale, is to be commemorated in France.
The Edinburgh University graduate, who founded the Women's Hospital for Foreign Service in 1915, will have a memorial dedicated to her in Abbaye de Royaumont.
After war broke out in 1914, Dr Inglis came up with the concept of sending teams of women medics to the front line.
Despite being told to stay at home and knit by the War Office, she, along with a team of other women headed out to France where they created a hospital with 200 beds.
In total she arranged for 1000 female medics to be sent as far afield as Russia and Malta.
