Delta clashes claim 12 lives

Fighting between cattle herders and farmers over land and water has killed a further 12 people in Kenya’s south-east, an aid group said yesterday.

The two communities periodically clash over resources but this incident fits a pattern of violence seen prior to three previous elections, according to the Red Cross. Kenya is due to hold elections in six months’ time.

The Kenya Red Cross said another ten people were wounded in fighting in the Tana River delta, near where more than 52 people from the Orma tribe of semi-nomadic herders were killed last month by members of the Pokomo tribe of farmers.
