Congress party left in lurch by protest

India’s ruling Congress party is working to shore up its coalition after a crucial ally withdrew its support in protest over economic reforms that included fuel price rises and lifting curbs on foreign retailers.

The departure of the Trinamool Congress has left the government with a minority of MPs and dependent on outside parties to keep power.
