China hails a 'major step' to Taiwan peace
CHINESE newspapers today hailed the meeting of Taiwan opposition leader Lien Chan and Chinese President Hu Jintao in Beijing on Friday as a "major step", but said the China-Taiwan conflict was far from resolved.
A commentary in the Beijing News implied that real progress towards peace with self-ruled Taiwan, which China views as a renegade province, would require government-level talks, meaning involvement of Taiwan President Chen Shui-bian.
