Chaos in Italy as thousands strike

PLANES were grounded, buses and trains came to a halt, some schools had to close and hospitals were affected as workers across Italy came out on strike yesterday to demand job protection.

The walkout was called by Italy's largest union, the CGIL, to protest at cuts and to press prime minister Silvio Berlusconi's government to come up with employment-boosting policies.
