Canadian jailed for plotting UK terror attacks
A CANADIAN man was jailed for ten and a half years yesterday for plotting with a group of British Muslims to bomb buildings and natural gas pipes in the UK.
Momim Khawaja is the first person to be sentenced under Canadian anti-terrorism laws passed after the 9/11 attacks. He was convicted last year of financing and facilitating terrorism.
A Canadian-born Muslim of Pakistani descent, Khawaja was accused of collaborating with a group of Britons of Pakistani descent in a failed 2004 plan to attack London's Ministry of Sound nightclub, a shopping centre and electrical and gas facilities.
Meanwhile, Dutch police arrested seven people suspected of preparing a terrorist attack in Amsterdam yesterday, including a relative of one of the attackers who died in the 2004 bombings in Madrid.
