Britain and US call for end to Kenyan election violence
EFFORTS to secure a peaceful resolution to the escalating violence in Kenya will continue today as Britons holidaying in the east African country are warned to stay indoors.
Foreign Secretary David Miliband and US Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice issued a joint statement calling for the cessation of violence and pledging the support of "diplomatic and political efforts".
At least 270 people have been killed in recent days – including 50 who were burnt to death when a church was torched by a mob.
About 350 people arrived at Gatwick on a flight from the Kenyan city of Mombasa, parts of which the Foreign and Commonwealth Office is advising Britons not to visit.
Stuart Smith, 40, and Angela Furnivall, 34, from Edinburgh, said: "We heard the violence was about 2km up the road from us but security was good."
President Kibaki, sworn in on Sunday after a vote opponents said was rigged, said political parties should meet immediately, and called for calm.
