BRAZIL'S attorney general has asked the Supreme Court to legalise same-sex unions in the home of the world's largest Roman Catholic population.

In a motion filed with the court last week, Attorney General Deborah Duprat said there are "no reasonable arguments to justify denying homosexuals the right to have their stable relationships recognised by law". A bill to give same-sex couples the same rights as married heterosexual couples has been stalled in Congress for more than a decade.
