Baby road dumpers jailed

A RUSSIAN court has jailed a young mother and her brother for eight and nine years respectively after they admitted dumping her nine-month-old son on a Moscow motorway hoping he would be killed.

Moscow regional court yesterday said Elena Osina, 24, and her brother Alexander, 21, pleaded guilty to attempted murder in the May 2011 incident.

A passing motorist rescued the child unharmed after about ten minutes, and the boy has since been adopted.

The motorist earlier told Russian media he thought he saw a kitten or a dog on the four-lane road before he stopped. The woman and her brother were watching what was happening, investigators said.

Investigators said the boy had been lying on a poorly lit section and it was a miracle he had not been hit.

In court, Osina claimed she decided to get rid of the baby after her boyfriend moved out and she was stuck at home with her parents.

After the verdict Osina said she thought the sentences harsh.

“Everyone can make a mistake,” she said.
