ANC activist dies aged 85
AN activist who was sentenced with Nelson Mandela to life imprisonment in 1964 for trying to overthrow South Africa’s apartheid government has died at the age of 85.
African National Congress veteran Raymond Mhlaba, who became premier of Eastern Cape in 1994, had been suffering from liver cancer.
President Thabo Mbeki hailed him as "a stalwart of the liberation struggle whose life enriched all South Africans".
Mhlaba was released from jail in October 1989.
