Ailing Chavez raises minimum wage

President Hugo Chavez raised Venezuela’s minimum wage by almost a third this weekend as the ailing socialist leader aimed to solidify his base among the poor and win re-election.

Mr Chavez is flying back and forth for cancer treatment in Cuba, removing himself from the daily political debate as his rival, Henrique Capriles, pushes ahead with a campaign tour.
