£2.45bn in aid for Sudan

DONOR nations pledged a preliminary £2.45 billion in assistance to Sudan yesterday, aiming to bolster a 2005 north-south peace deal in the east African country still torn by violence in its Darfur region.

Sudan had said it needed 3.1 billion up to 2011, on top of 1 billion in humanitarian aid, but a deadly aerial bombing in Darfur three days ago cast a shadow over the meeting of donor nations in Oslo.

World Bank officials said the money should help Sudan continue to implement the 2005 comprehensive peace agreement, which ended the longest civil war in Africa.

Britain pledged 330 million and said it hoped the bulk of its funds would be used for development.
