Inquiry failings

Have your say

You argue (editorial, 22 August) that the fatal accident inquiry into the Glasgow bin lorry crash has failed the relatives of those who died in the accident. I would suggest the inquiry has also failed Harry Clarke, the driver of the lorry.

Mr Clarke was subjected to outrageous haranguing by Dorothy Bain QC when she knew full well that, because of the decision by her own clients to seek a private prosecution, he could not, following advice from Sheriff Beckett, respond.

As a result, Mr Clarke has been painted into a corner, unfairly pilloried by the media and deprived of the opportunity to put on the record his side of the story, including, for example, the fact that he drove on hundreds of occasions between 2010 and 22 December 2014 without it appears any problem.

Not the Scottish legal system’s finest hour.
