Injured soldiers' centre takes next step
A DROP-IN centre for injured servicemen – set up in memory of a tragic Lothians paratrooper – has taken a crucial step in its development.
A lease agreement has been struck as part of the Mark Wright project, which will see the centre established in Dalkeith.
Corporal Wright, who died trying to save colleagues from an unmarked minefield in Afghanistan three years ago, was posthumously awarded the George Cross for gallantry.
His parents, Bob and Jem, have embarked on a charity project to create the centre at Hardengreen Lane and are in the process of raising 60,000.
Once open, the centre will offer a variety of support schemes and assistance to soldiers who are struggling to cope with the effects of war, such as post-traumatic stress or injuries. Trained volunteers will be enlisted to provide counselling and recreational activities.
Bob Wright said: "We are very proud to have our son's name linked with this, but are more pleased for the lads who will get to use the facilities there. Up to now, there was nothing for them."
The Ministry of Defence has also submitted a request to name a conference room at a new command base in Middlesex after Corporal Wright.
