In pictures: The stunning designs proposed for Dundee museum
Six of the world's best architects have revealed their visions to create a new international attraction for the city of Dundee. Here are all six designs for the V&A Museum, scheduled to open in 2014.
Cool cubism cuts the ice
REX, founded in 2000 in New York City, recently completed the Dee and Charles Wyly Theatre for the AT&T Performing Arts Center in Dallas. Other cultural projects in progress include Museum Plaza, a 62-storey skyscraper housing a contemporary art center in Louisville, Kentucky, and the new Central Library and Music Conservatory for the city of Kortrijk, Belgium.
Low rise high impact
Snhetta was established in Oslo in 1989 after winning the international design competition for the Alexandria Library in Egypt. Its current portfolio includes the 1,600 seat Norwegian National Opera in Oslo, the World Trade Centre Museum in New York, and the Cultural House in Sandvika, Oslo.
Wave of the future
Kengo Kuma & Associates was founded in 1990 in Japan. Its European office is in Paris. Kuma is a professor at the Graduate School of Architecture at the University of Tokyo. His approach is to use natural materials to create airy, open spaces filled with light. The firm designed Nagasaki's art museum in 2005 and the Contemporary Arts Centre in Marseille, under construction.
Asymmetric angle
Delugan Meissl Associated Architects, based in Vienna, were formed 15 years ago. Their international projects include the new Porsche Museum in Stuttgart, the forthcoming building of the Filmmuseum in Amsterdam and the Darat King Abdullah II Cultural Center in Amman, Jordan.
Cut glass floating free
Steven Holl Architects, formed in 1976, has bases in New York and Beijing. It specialises in works for the arts and higher education such as the Kiasma Museum of Contemporary Art in Helsinki.Current work includes a new building at the Glasgow School of Art, the Arts Building West at the University of Iowa, and the Center for Creative and Performing Arts at Princeton University.
Powerful attachment
Sutherland Hussey Architects was established in 1997 in Edinburgh. Completed projects to date include private residences, an art gallery in Inverness and a cheese factory in Cornwall. More recently they have been working on two major museums in China – the Chengdu City Museum in Sichuan, and a 25m Archaeological Museum in Neihulang, Inner Mongolia.
