Boxing: Gardens party planned for boxing extravaganza

Princes STREET GARDENS is to host a major international boxing match.

An Edinburgh/Eastern Scotland select will take on a team of London-based boxers on Friday, September 9, in an event which will also feature a women's bout.

Meadowbank Club coach Mark Geraghty has confirmed his two-time Scottish women's light-weight champion, Katie Atkin, will fight on the bill. He said: "Katie won both her Scottish 60kg titles boxing for an Aberdeen club but she has just joined us at Meadowbank after graduating in law.

"Another two of my Meadowbank boxers - light-welterweight Sean Spence and lightweight Lewis Paulin - have been asked to box on the bill and are keenly looking forward to what will be a novel experience. The Londoners will provide stiff opposition which will benefit my boxers so early in the new season."

The Gardens show has also captured the imagination of other local amateur boxing coaches such as Lochend's John McCarron and East Lothian's Hamish Colgan.

McCarron said "We've been asked to provide our lightweight David Dickson for the bill and it will be a great chance for him to box in such an impressive venue - and we hope even more of our boxers will box on this bill too."

Such sentiments were shared by Colgan, who added: "I've been asked to provide East Lothian welterweight Keith Colgan for the show. It should be a great boxing occasion."

The seating capacity has been fixed at 2000 for the September 9 show and tickets are available from the following Capital outlets: XL Clothing Stores in Edinburgh, G-Star Store in the Capital, Powerhouse Fitness, Edinburgh, and at any amateur boxing club gym location in the city.
