Immigrants face higher fees to cover future service-use
IMMIGRANTS could be asked to pay higher fees when they apply to come to the UK to fund public services they may use after their arrival, it was reported last night.
It is understood he proposal will form part of a green paper on citizenship being launched by Home Secretary Jacqui Smith tomorrow.
The Home Office reportedly hopes to raise 15 million a year from migrants for what it terms a British Trust Fund.
The additional fee could be set at 10 per cent of the cost of a visa – 20 on top of a typical 200 charge for those wishing to stay in the UK for more than six months.
Migrants from within the European Union will not pay anything towards the fund, as they do not require a visa to live and work in the UK. A Home Office spokeswoman declined to discuss the report.
