Immigrant jailed for card scam

AN illegal immigrant has been jailed for 15 months for his part in a counterfeit credit card scam and is set to be deported back to Hong Kong.

Chun Wing Wu travelled from his Newcastle base to attempt the frauds in East Lothian and the east of Scotland.

Jedburgh Sheriff Court yesterday heard how he tried to obtain a total of 660 from the Lothian and Borders Co-op stores in Coldstream, Berwickshire, and Gifford, East Lothian on March 10.

The 23-year-old, eventually gained 300 from a garage in Prestonpans, East Lothian, later the same day.

Sheriff Kevin Drummond told first offender Wu custody was inevitable as "an element of punishment and deterrent."

Sheriff Drummond back-dated the 15 month sentence to March 29 when Wu was first taken into custody.

He also recommended Wu be deported from the UK on the completion of his sentence.
