Hurricane Katrina forced more than one million people to flee the Gulf coast. New Orleans' population fell from 455,188 to 354,850, a loss of over 100,000.
l Most of the 1,836 dead drowned. A further 135 people are still missing.
l There are still 64,135 derelict city properties.
l The crime rate is twice the US average, at 1,019 crimes per 100,000, up from 948 in 2004.
l The US government spent $120.5billion on relief and reconstruction.
l Poverty rate remains high at 23 per cent, against 13 per cent US-wide, but is at its lowest since 1979.
