His face may be recognised around the world, but that wasn’t enough for bouncers at a Fringe venue, who denied actor Hugh Grant access to a comedy show at the weekend.

Grant had hoped to watch the American stand-up Eddie Pepitone at The Tron pub just off the Royal Mile in Edinburgh but his 10-strong group were refused entry by bouncers on the door because some of them did not have identification.

The star of Four Weddings and a Funeral had arrived for the 11.40pm show in the basement of the venue on Friday night but were forced to walk away by the doormen.

There were many reported sightings of Grant around the Edinburgh festival on Twitter over the weekend.

He is in Scotland for a golfing holiday.
