Householders hit by rise in insurance premiums

Home owners in Edinburgh and East Dunbartonshire have the highest rises in insurance premiums anywhere in the UK apart from Dorking, according to Moneysupermarket.com.

Householders in Edinburgh city centre and Milngavie, near Glasgow, have experienced increases of 45 and 40 per cent respectively - many times higher than the national average increase of 6 per cent to buildings and contents cover.

Experts said the most likely factors boosting prices include heightened cases of fraudulent claims, the cost of repairs from weather damages and an increase in crime levels in the area.

"The cost of insuring homes in the UK is steadily on the increase," said Julie Owens of Moneysupermarket.com.

"Things look set to get worse with the increase in prices unlikely to slow down in the coming years."

She added: "There is very little you can do about the postcode in which you live, except move house, but you can reduce premiums by installing a good security system and lighting."
