Hotel magnate and wife honoured for service to arts
A LEADING Scottish businessman has been honoured by Prince Charles for his contribution to cultural life.
Hotel magnate Donald MacDonald and wife Louise were given the Prince of Wales Medal for Arts Philanthropy for their involvement with the Scottish Chamber Orchestra, the Edinburgh International Festival and the East Neuk Festival.
Mr MacDonald, former head of the MacDonald Hotels chain, has been chair of the chamber orchestra since 1985 and helped broker the deal which saw the Bank of Scotland sponsor their annual fireworks concert in Princes Street Gardens.
The couple were also instrumental in saving the Edinburgh Playhouse from closure in the 1970s.
Fife's East Neuk Festival has grown into a fully independent chamber music event – the winner of a Royal Philharmonic Society Award – in just six years.
