A SHOWDOWN between bailiffs and residents was expected today as scores of families were due to be evicted from the UK’s biggest illegal travellers’ site.Hundreds of residents recently lost a decade-long legal fight over unauthorised development on the former scrapyard.

A SHOCKING Facebook page mocking the fate of four men killed in the Wales mining disaster is under investigation.

Police received numerous complaints from the public who called for action to get the page taken down and a union official condemned the site as “thoroughly sick”.

Cable renews campaign to curb executives’ pay

BUSINESS Secretary Vince Cable today renewed his campaign to curb the pay and perks of top executives by signalling that firms will have to publicly justify handing out multi-million pound packages.

He was due to tell the Liberal Democrat conference in Birmingham that new rules will require the total value of salary, shares, pensions and bonuses to be set out clearly every year. From October firms will also have to disclose the criteria used to determine their huge reward packages.

Saving of £2.4m if tags used

At least £2.4 million would have been saved in the last month alone if all those jailed on remand over this summer’s riots were released on curfew with an electronic tag instead, figures showed today.

More than 700 people have been on remand since the first post-riots court statistics were published last month. If they had all been tagged instead, £110 would have been saved for each defendant every day.

Winner marries after 54 years

Film director Michael Winner, 75, was finally getting married today after courting his leading lady for more than half a century.

He met Geraldine Lynton-Edwards, now 70, in 1957 when he was a 21-year-old filmmaker and she was a 16-year-old actress.

Devon: A murder inquiry is under way after a woman was found shot dead. Police made the grim discovery after being called to a remote property, near Parracombe in north Devon, to reports of a domestic incident. A man in his 50s has been arrested.

Co Durham: Two women were being questioned on suspicion of murder today after a 20-year-old man was found stabbed to death.

Police launched a murder investigation after the man’s body was found at a house in Peterlee early yesterday.

The two women, aged 24 and 20, were arrested at the house.
